The 2023 Othello by Dominus Estate is an approachable, early-drinking Bordeaux-style blend that serves as the entry-level bottling from the historic Napanook Vineyard in Yountville. Sourced from the estate’s front blocks where soils are high in clay and silt, the 2023 vintage is highly praised by critics for its elegance, juicy fruit expression, and excellent value for money. Blend and Vinification
Composition: A blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Petit Verdot.
Aging: Matured for 18 months in French oak barrels. It sees the lowest proportion of new oak (15% to 20%) among the Dominus trio, keeping the focus entirely on vibrant fruit purity.
The 2023 Vintage: Following a 2022 season where Dominus released zero wine due to strict quality standards, 2023 benefited from heavy winter rains and a long, cool summer. This allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and develop excellent acidity and refined tannins.
Scent, Taste, and Character
Aromas: An inviting bouquet of black cherry, plum, red currant, and cassis, layered with cedar, sandalwood, tobacco, and cacao.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with a silky texture. It balances bold red and dark berry flavors with savory undertones of graphite, new leather, and light baking spices.
Finish: Long, fresh, and harmonious with a pleasant mineral tension and hints of cranberry or orange zest.
Unlike the flagship Dominus, Othello is designed for immediate accessibility. It can be enjoyed right now (decanting for an hour is recommended) or cellared comfortably through 2033 to 2040. Pair it with grilled sirloin, quality beef burgers, roasted lamb, or mushroom-based pasta dishes.
The ideal serving temperature for the 2023 Othello by Dominus is between 60°F and 65°F (15°C to 18°C).
